Outstanding Team and Culture Building

When a group of people gather around a fire in a large tent, a genuine sense of community is created. I haven't experienced anything like this anywhere else, says Jørn Aanestad, long-time regional manager at Meny.

I’ve taken my colleagues on three trips to Finnmark, so it's almost unnecessary to say that I think it's an incredible experience. Being in the magnificent landscape all day has a huge impact in itself, whether the trip is on a snowmobile or ATV. Experiencing the close proximity to reindeer herds, gaining insight into the rich culture of the Sami people, being mesmerised by the traditional music of joik, and witnessing the immense pride of the reindeer herders, all of these leave a profound and lasting impact on one's soul.

However, the group dynamics that emerge in the evenings can be just as valuable for a group of colleagues like us. Something happens to people when they gather around a fire, still wearing snowmobile suits and thick boots, and everyone is full of impressions from the day's experiences. In contrast to the busy atmosphere of a typical conference venue with its numerous bars, hotel rooms, and organised events, the group dynamic here is distinguished by a unique serenity. Here, we were all together in one big tent, everything was so down-to-earth, tour leader Johan took care of the cooking and the conversation flowed. Of course, much of what we talked about was centred around our experiences of the day, and there were also good discussions about work and our field, but the surroundings allowed for everyone to lower their shoulders and be themselves in a whole new way. Some may bring an instrument, some enjoy singing, some tell stories - everyone contributes, even those who may be more introverted in daily life, and I think it's the down-to-earth nature and simplicity of the environment that creates a special sense of security. I have no doubt that these experiences have created an unusually strong bond that we have also benefited from in our work life later on. This is team and culture building in a class of its own.

Allow me to emphasise the exceptional professionalism of the organisers. When so much of a trip depends on the unpredictability of nature, weather, and wind, it's only natural to expect some risk involved. However, the organisers were able to adjust plans and programs with ease, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience. They had backup plans in place and maintained a sense of calm and control throughout. Furthermore, we were well-prepared in advance with detailed information, specific packing lists, and ongoing support, making the entire experience a seamless one.

For us at Meny, having the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with reindeer as a raw material was a valuable bonus. Many of our participants work with fresh produce, including meat from Finnmark Rein, making this experience particularly relevant. Participating in the knowledge and culture of the reindeer herders and witnessing their commitment to animal welfare was a professionally enriching experience for us.
